Great mountain ranges rising in northern Bhutan run north and south, dividing the country into forested valleys with some pastureland.  Bhutan's tallest peak is Kula Gangri which rest at 7,554 meters. The perpetually snow-covered Great Himalayas are virtually uninhabited, except for scattered groups of nomads and retreating Buddhist monks in remote monasteries. Thunderstorms and torrential rains are common; rainfall averages from 508 cm to 635 cm on the southern plains.
